Craftcation 2013

So Craftcation happened! And I suggest you make a mental note to sign up as soon as tickets go on sale next year because this year sold out. It was a really great conference – Ventura is beautiful and walkable (hooray!), Nicole + Delilah really pack the schedule with TONS of programs + events and you can work on your craft, your business and your friendships all in one place. Perfect!

Craftcation 2013 (1)

I had a blast teaching a leather workshop where we made business card holders. I’ve shared a few leather biz card projects, but this is a new design that I’ll share over on Whimseybox later this week. Here’s a peek:

I also talked about how to get your first 1,000 blog followers. The full presentation is at bit.ly/craftcation1000 if you want to check it out.

Yeah, I look like I’m mesmerized by my own site. There are TONS of great pictures of the event here, so go check them out so you can peek at everything that happened and get excited for next year. If you come, I’ll explain what I was doing here :)

Actually, I have no idea what I was doing there. Thanks to everyone who came to my sessions, hope you’ll stay in touch!

So, even thought we’re not done unpacking from the move, yesterday I rummaged through boxes to pack a suitcase and head further west for Craftcation where I’ll be speaking and teaching this weekend. It was a bit of a schlep getting here- drive to the airport (whyyyy is the Denver airport so far east?!), fly to LAX, take a ~45min shuttle to LA’s Union Station, take an Amtrak 2 hours to Ventura, CA. But I made it, and had the great luck of meeting a new friend, Helen from Helliemae’s Caramels (yum!) from Denver on the 2 block walk from the train to the hotel. Turns out we flew out of Denver on different flights less than 30 minutes apart into different airports and wound up in the same train car. What are the odds?

Last night kicked off with a fun craft beer tasting and crochet class. I basically felt like they planned that event for me personally. Now I know a little crochet! I’m looking forward to the rest of the weekend. Also, thanks to Rosalie for this interview with me on Unanimous Craft.

Looking for adventure? Here’s one you should definitely consider – Craftcation!

I’ll be there speaking and teaching alongside awesome creatives like Creativebug founder Jeanne Lewis, Paper ‘N Stitch’s Brittni Melhoff, The Crafty Chica Cathy Cano-Murillo, Craftypod’s Diane Gilleland, knitwear design extraordiane Anne Kuo Lukito and many others. The conference is being held March 21 – 24th in Ventura, CA  which sounds like an awesome location that I can’t wait to check out.

The best part is that I got to meet the organizers, Delilah + Nicole, at Alt Summit a few weeks ago and they described Craftcation as “if Maker Faire and Alt Summit had a baby”. They also promised late night PJ dance parties. I can’t wait! Here’s the full info:

Alt Memories

I’m sure the blogosphere is bursting with Alt recaps this week. (As it should be, because Alt was awesome!) But I got home Sunday night after 9 days away and haven’t so much as peeked inside my Google Reader yet. There’s just too much going on right now. However, my dear friend Linnea just sent this cute picture from one evening in the room when we Bri, Rachel and I took a break to watch some Bad Lip Reading. (How did I not know about that before!?!)

Here’s Alt in bullet points:

  • Go.
  • The “business cards” situation is out of effing control there. Next year I’m threading my business cards onto a silk ribbon and tying them onto puppies and handing them out. THAT is how you win at Alt.
  • One of the highlights for me was Stefan Sagmeister’s keynote. So inspiring.
  • The Grand America hotel was a first-rate venue and downtown Salt Lake City was cute + walkable. I enjoyed both more than I expected.
  • I LOVED meeting + talking with everyone all weekend. Can’t wait to do it again at Craftcation coming up in March (described to me as “if Alt and Maker Faire had a baby, it would be Craftcation!”) and at future Alt events as well.

I’ll break it down DIY Biz-style in an upcoming post soon, too.

Hi guys! I spent about 70/72 hours this weekend sleeping or half-sleeping on the couch. Note to future Excelerate Labs companies: Demo Day (week!) is exhausting! If you were similarly tuned out or enjoying the sunshine with friends and family you might have missed the fact that Craftcation tickets went on sale 9/1!

Craftcation is an annual conference that will be taking place in Ventura, CA March 21-24, 2013. I don’t know what your late March plans are, but I bet you’ll be ready for some beautiful CA sunshine and great learning about indie biz + DIY! Early bird tickets are on sale until 12/1 which, seriously, is practically around the corner already, so don’t miss out!
