Dude, I’m going to Alt. Are you?

Alt Summit Prep
(testing out part of our display)

Hiya! Things in WhimseyboxHQ are getting crazy as I’m just back from CHA (photo recap here) and now we’re getting ready to pack up and head to Alt Summit in SLC! Bri, Rachel and I will be out there because Whimseybox is a sponsor of this awesome event. We’re hosting a dinner Wednesday night and then on Thursday we’ll have an awesome booth setup in the Venezia Lounge (I don’t know where that is either, but we’ll figure it out when we get there!) alongside other sponsors like Honest. So basically I’m going to be Jessica Alba’s best friend because, yeah, she’s going to be there too.

But that had better not distract people from our amazing setup (ha!) because we have a really awesome booth planned. So if you’re going to be at Alt you (yes, YOU!) have to stop by on Thursday. It’s a play on our Stop Pinning. Start Making. tagline that you’re going to want to see in person. Here’s a video we shot for WhimseyboxTV of one of our planning meetings. Fun challenge: figure out why no one mentioned that my hair is totally crazy while we were shooting that?!

Hope to see you there!

DIY Biz: Kill Your Heroes (or eat samosas with them)

CHA 2013
(Right before the show opened)

Don’t actually kill them. I’ve been listening to too much AWOLNATION.

Last weekend I got to spend some time around some of my creative ‘heroes’ at Craft and Hobby Association tradeshow. It’s kind of a weird feeling when the Internet comes to life like that! Designers, bloggers and personalities I know primarily through social media walking around in 3D. (I expect next week at Alt it will be the same thing x10.)

I feel kind of guilty saying this, but I don’t totally look forward to CHA. I mean I do and I don’t. If you’ve even been to a tradeshow you probably understand. It can be exhausting and overwhelming, and it’s this automatic benchmark that screams “Six months have gone by! You were going to get more done by now!” Plus it follows the holidays so closely that it’s like there’s a wormhole I fell into at Thanksgiving and popped out of in Anaheim. I wish there were more time to prepare and make sure I’m making the most of my time there. (Wasting time or money drives me CRAZY.) But there’s never enough time to get it all together.

When I’m sitting behind my screen, it’s easy to get the idea that everyone else has it together. That their new product launch went off without a hitch, their life really is as shiny as it looks on Instagram, their last book just wrote itself, they get 8 hours of sleep a night and never miss a day at the gym. Fortunately the cure for this is meeting them in person. It’s not that they’re a wreck (they aren’t!) but it’s much, much harder to maintain that totally unrealistic vision when you’re sharing samosas.  (Samosas = the cure for many ailments.)

Ultimately I had a great experience at CHA. This was my third time and it’s more enjoyable each show because (1) I’m starting to figure out what the hell I’m doing! and (2) I’ve gotten to know more people. Catching up with other businesses (especially the ones I like to think of as ‘Craft 2.0’’ like Kollabora, Craftfoxes, Prime Publishing and Creativebug) and all of the talented authors, bloggers and designers is worth the trip out there alone. The creative people I see at CHA are all such smart, kind, talented and hard-working individuals. They make me excited about our industry and what we’re working on at Whimseybox. Now I can’t wait to get home and back to work, cuz there’s only six months until the next show…

PS – There was just a great Craftypod episode kind of about this.

PPS – I Instagrammed the show like crazy on the Whimseybox account – check out pics from the show here.

CHA + more cool stuff

(my view. nice, but it’s colder here than I expected!)

What a whirlwind this week has been! It was full of web host problems (ugh), Quickbooks (triple ugh) and Alt prep (hooray!). Now I’m out in Anaheim for the Craft + Hobby tradeshow – can’t wait to see that great new creative stuff coming out this year! In the meantime, here’s what caught my eye this week –

– Incredible laser-cut wooden maps

– There’s no such thing as too many blankets + I want all of these

– I’ve been reading a lot of sci-fi lately, which is a totally new thing that just started over the holidays. But whether you’re into that or not, you’ll be amazed by this drone deliver service idea. (Seriously, I want this.)

– The DIY industrial furniture on Martha’s Crafts Dept. blog is awesome. Maybe for Whimseybox HQ someday?

– Spoonflower shared an awesome dresser DIY that I would have loved as a kid. (I was obsessed with the logic puzzles that were like ‘Alicia is shorter than Joe. Joe is taller that Molly. Mike’s favorite color is blue. etc).

– Love this beautiful designed beer reference, Beertone.

– Have you seen the latest WhimseyboxTV – DIY Geo Stamped Calendar!

The Craft and Hobby Show via Malibu

Wait, was the Craft and Hobby Show (CHA) in Malibu, CA? No, it was right here in Chicago, but the nice people at GM offered to loan me a Chevy Malibu to drive around for a little while, and the week of CHA was the perfect opportunity. I’m spending the summer without a car here in Chicago because public transportation and taxis take me pretty much everywhere I need to go.

Hiya car!

Except for the convention center where CHA was taking place, which is out in the sububs. So it was excellent to have a fun car to enjoy as I raced drove safely between downtown and CHA. Plus it was fully loaded with everything from a backup camera to XM radio. (And  yeah, that backup camera came in really handy while parallel parking a brand new unfamiliar car!)

Oh, XM radio. Do you have satellite radio? My husband does, but I don’t. It’s amazing how much I enjoy riding around listening to Alt Nation and some of the other stations instead of ‘regular’ radio. Plus, it makes sitting in traffic wayyy better. (I used to commute ~40 miles EACH WAY to work through Chicago traffic on the Kennedy every day. I so should have gotten satellite radio! …Or a different job.)

And after a week of back and forth and all around I still never filled up the tank. Nice!

It was also fun to drive through parts of neighborhoods I haven’t seen since I’ve been back in Chicago. For example, this is my old street!

Unforunately I didn’t get many pictures at CHA because I had plans to shoot video on the last day but it fell through :( But I did get to catch up with folks from the CHA, FaveCrafts, Kollabora, Goodsmiths, CRAFT, Craftsy, Dollar Store Crafts, Craft Test Dummies and more. One night a few of us when to Farmhouse for dinner which was great fun. (And definitely worth a visit if you’re in the neighborhood.) Also, everybody loved our Stop Pinning Start Making tote bags, so yay!

Disclosure: GM lent me this car. They didn’t ask me to write this, even when I offered to say whatever they wanted if they’d let me keep the car forever. Winking smile

OMG CHA and The Week That Was–January 27, 2012

I’m about to head out to Anaheim for CHA, the Craft and Hobby Association tradeshow. While I feel like the last year has been a whirlwind of tradeshows and conventions this will be my first CHA and I’m psyched! I’ve packed all of my flat shoes and charged all of my batteries – I’ll share what I find here, on Twitter @whimseybox and on the Whimseybox blog. Any request? Let me know, I *will* chase down Vanna White for you.

– Life list item: Make a Rube Goldberg machine. I’m sure it won’t be as awesome as this Target one, though. I love when all the silverware jingles.
This alone might be worth a trip to Amsterdam.
