Once Upon A Time
(old pic from 2010. RIP succulent.)

After months of collecting dust I’ve rediscovered my Kindle. And inexplicably suddenly started reading tons of sci-fi. It started with Nexus, and then I moved on to Ender’s Game. Then I read Wool Omnibus Edition and the next books in that series First Shift and Second Shift. And then on Thursday I read The Martian on my flight from Houston to (still cold!) Orange Country. Even if you would never consider yourself a sci-fi person, if you’re looking for some fun reading I’d definitely recommend checking some of these out. The other great thing is that sci-fi books are so much cheaper (at least the Kindle editions) than books I’m used too. Many of these were $0.99 – $2.99!

I also read Gone Girl this holiday and have A Visit from the Goon Squad patiently hanging out in digital purgatory waiting for me. Are you a reader? Do you have any recommendations for me?

I read Jo Jo Moyes book Me Before You and loved it. My friend in London sent it to me last fall. It was super popular in the UK. It was reviewed last weekend in the SNYT.

Oh Enders Game is one of my favorites!!! Inside: Inside Out\Outside In by Maria V. Snyder is actually two books. They are teen books I believe, but that never stops me. It might be a little more expensive, but I can lend it to you if you want!

I thought Ender’s Game was so good when I read it when I was 15, but does it hold up when you’re an adult? Too bad Orson Scott Card makes me sad with his terrible homophobia and bizarre rants.

If you want more science fiction, “Oryx and Crake” is really good. And probably anything else by Margaret Atwood, though I’ve only read “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “The Blind Assassin.” If you want some some serious science with your fiction, Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars trilogy (“Red Mars,” “Green Mars,” and “Blue Mars”), will keep you busy for awhile. If you’ve never read Ray Bradbury or Kurt Vonnegut you might try some of their classic stuff, too. Haha, I used to be such a sci-fi nerd in my teens, maybe partly because I could actually afford the cheap used paperbacks :-)

For non-science fiction, I recently read and really liked “The Yiddish Policeman’s Union” and “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay,” both by Micheal Chabon. I’ve been hearing good things about “A Visit from the Goon Squad,” so I’ll have to check that one out!

One of my favorite reads lately is “The Passage” by Justin Cronin, who is a professor at Rice. It’s a vampire book but more like the X files and super captivating. Plus the story starts out in Houston, TX so that’s fun.

I just finished the Maze Runner triology by James Dishner. Loved the first one (which I got for 99 cents from Amazon on one of their specials), thought the second one sucked, and the third was better but not as good as the first.

I also just read the Matched trilogy by Ally Condie, and loved it despite some inconsistencies. Very fast read because the plot just keeps you racing through it.

Are you on GoodReads by any chance? I love getting to see what my friends are reading and seeing their reviews. I don’t always agree with their opinions, but it’s still fun to keep track of. And I’m never at a loss for what to read next. :)

I was on GoodReads a few years ago, that’s a good idea. Thanks for the suggestions!
